Why Pottermore could be too awesome for words

Fans of Harry Potter are falling over themselves - correction: OURselves - recently because of a mysterious happening. I saw "MORE POTTER" trending on Twitter last Wednesday and wondered what it was about. Apparently, there was some sort of treasure-hunt going on to find various letters, spelling out a word. As it turned out, the word wasn't "more Potter", it was "Pottermore". This led to Pottermore.com and the @Pottermore Twitter account.

On Thursday, this tweet came out:

Looks like the owls are getting ready to deliver some exciting news: www.youtube.com/JKRowlingAnnounces #pottermore

It links to a YouTube video page, where it counts down to an announcement by J.K. Rowling - set to be delivered on June 23. Question is, what the hell is Pottermore?

On Friday, BBC News picked it up as well:

Her spokeswoman said the project was "not a new book" and was not "directly related" to the final Potter film which is due out on 15 July. /.../ Producers of fan site The Leaky Cauldron said they had seen a preview of the Pottermore project, describing it as "breathtaking".

"BREATHTAKING"!! I'M ALL TINGLY!!!

Entertainment Weekly speculates that it means Potter Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Experience. OH. MY. GODS. What if it is? That's all my spare time taken up right there. Think about it, a Harry Potter MMORPG. The word "AWESOME" doesn't cut it. Not even if it was made huge, bolded, italicised, underlined and dyed red:

AWESOME

See? Words can't quite express the supreme awesomeness of this. According to EW, the trademark was filed a couple of years ago:

the application outlines Pottermore as a service “providing multiple-user access to a global computer information network, [...] on-line chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages among users in the field of general interest [and] on-line facilities for real-time interaction with other computer users concerning topics of general interest.”

Which could mean an expansive website, possibly with game elements, or maybe it is an MMO. They've already got all the merchandise rights sorted. It could very well be an MMO. Did something recently (which I can't discuss because of the non-disclosure agreement) that could well suggest it, because the thing that I did made me tingle with excitement of the mere possibility of what it implied.

Think about it, being able to walk around in the wonderful world of Harry Potter. This is what I do regularly in a forum at Rollspelet Svenska Hogwarts - playing own characters that go to Hogwarts (or work there as teachers), or work in the wizarding world. That's heaps of fun and helps develop writing skills, but it doesn't have the visual element of being able to walk around and actually see things, like in the movies (which is why I love them). You have to imagine them, like in the books, which is brilliant in its own right. But still. I love playing Dungeons & Dragons Online, and a DDO but in the wizarding world and/or at Hogwarts ... it would be a dream come true.

We'll have to wait and see, but I'm definitely keeping more than a keen eye and ear out for this.

Three days to go ... and never have three days felt longer than this.

What do you think Pottermore is? How would you feel if it was an MMORPG?

P.S. Really busy with work this week as well. Will post when I can.

  3. Interesting speculation! I was wondering if it was some sort of new informational site, full of the stuff JK dreamed up but never put into her books (like back story to a lot of the minor characters, etc).

  4. Byron: The HP world lends itself incredibly well to an MMO, so that'd be brilliant. :)

Carrots: Absolutely! As soon as I know anything, I won't be able to keep away from posting! :D

ifbyyes: Ooooh, that would also be really cool, actually. If it's a big website full of background info about the world and things within it, it would also be a dream come true. It would be incredibly useful for nefarious roleplaying purposes, a treasure trove of luscious facts. That makes me all tingly too! <3
