Did you know that if you want to become a citizen of the United Kingdom, you need to swear fealty to the Queen? You do. And that doesn't work for me for various reasons. (To become an Irish citizen, you need to swear fealty to the Irish flag, which I'd do that in a heartbeat. Wow, that was unsubtle.) However, having seen Prince Charles talking about things today, I'm thinking swearing fealty to him wouldn't be so bad, he's a nice guy who likes organic farming and things like that. It could totally work. Will he ever become King, though? That is the question.
On a side note, I think it's great that Britain is standing up and is proud of being British. Ra ra ra! This is the sort of country I fell in love with, not the chav culture we see on the Jeremy Kyle Show.
And yeah, in my humble opinion, Britain should remain a monarchy. Sweden, I'm not really bothered about, although I think it's nice to have a royal family, but Britain ... There's just so much history and tradition and culture associated with it. Sweden didn't get a day off work to watch Crown Princess Victoria marry her Daniel What's-his-face, and the King doesn't open parliament or anything. I think we need a British royal family, because it's something that ties us all together.
Anyway, the Jubilee Concert was fun. Some singers had seen better days (Paul McCartney in particular), or should have mimed and no one would've complained (Cheryl Cole) ... and Gary Barlow is trying to get knighted for snatching the goody-two-shoes off Bob Geldof and Bono. Never understood the appeal of Rolf Harris, but the Squeeze assures me the man's a proper legend, apparently. Ehh, right.
Anyhoo, happy celebrations, Britain and the Commonwealth! And the Queen, congratulations and keep up the good work!

Closet monarchist coming out here. Yes, Happy Jubilee week, Ma'am! Elizabethan Thames pageant. If this country of the northern hemisphere wishes to cut "apron strings" and design a republic - no problem. But why fix what ain't really broke?
ReplyDeleteWish that HM's consort and support had been able to be there today. HM keeps on carrying on, nevertheless. Hardly a poor role model. Thoughts are with the Duke.
A shame the BBC picks up a theme, and then decides it isn't appealing to the "right" demographic. Zen, for instance? Case Histories? Well, I suppose that is show biz. But...

Apparently, during the river thing, they kept promising sketches by the Horrible Histories team, who had spent hours getting ready with prosthetics, makeup and period clothing, and in the end, all they got to do was one lousy sketch. I've seen several on Twitter who have submitted complaints to the BBC about it. Wasn't watching the show myself, but from the sounds of it, I didn't miss anything.

ReplyDeleteYou certainly may. I liked the flexibility of how you could log in with it, like using Twitter. I also liked the "Like" button on the comments. Just didn't like how it would be slow to load, wouldn't show up at all in the mobile template (thus making comments made when viewing the blog on a mobile invisible on computers), and break every time I did something with the template. Oh well. At least Blogger have implemented nested comments now, yay!
